What Kind of Sound Does a Snail Make?

A mother, father and daughter were taking a walk, enjoying the sounds of nature.

Mother: I love the sound of the wind rustling in the trees.
Father: I love the twittering of the birds.
Little Girl: I love the sound snails make.
Mother and Father: Huh?
Mother: But, Honey, snails don’t make any sound.
Little Girl: Yes they do. See! (Stepping on a snail crossing their path.) They go CRUNCH!

Just another reminder that not everyone sees the world the way we do. It pays to ask rather than trust our assumptions. ;)

That look on the snail’s face–surprise, but fearful. How do you do it Jean, with a few dots? He’s not just a shell. There’s a body there. I don’t think I’ll get pleasure out of the CRUNCH I used to get.

A big mistake I make is to assume that people are thinking what I’m thinking so understand me. It pays if I ask, “Do you know what I’m saying?” We’ll get on the same page.

Actually “Do you know what I’m saying?” won’t do it. Maybe what they’re thinking isn’t what you meant. Have them tell you what you meant & paraphrase it differently if they didn’t “get it”.

Grrannymar,
I’m clearly not a gardener if I’m sympathetic to the poor snail!

bikehikebabe,
Sometimes it also helps if you show you understand them too. But like everything in life, there are no guarantees. ;)

Isn’t it amazing what a few lines and dots can convey? That’s why I love cartoons. I just fiddle and fiddle until I start seeing something I like. It takes a lot of time, but I want to do it.

For the snail I just took a black and white version and tried different facial expressions:

Thank you for the encouragement. :)

I am a believer in ahimsa and do not even swat a fly or a mosquito. I find the little girl’s action to be one that deserves some action from the parents. Perhaps to teach her to be more careful. I accept that each of us has his/her own perception of phenomenon, but that should not stop us from trying to make a difference.

rummuser,
As you can tell, I identify with the snail. And I know a lot of gardeners who would disagree with us. Then there are those who are vegetarians not because they love animals but because they hate plants. ;)

I agree. We have different perception and each is different from another. However great the difference, the only denominator should be respect in each others perception.

Sophie,
I agree with that. Thanks for stopping by. :)
